the Community Recommends
The following is a collection of recommendations extracted from the "Willow Glen Backfence" eList, and the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association (WGNA) eList before that, saved and organized in a manner to help you find the name when you need it. The format is by category (i.e., "plumber", "gardener", etc.), followed by various service providers that have been recommended recently by members of the eList community. Contact information is provided when available, although you may need to search (e.g., phonebook or Google) for additional details. The name of the person who made the recommendation is also provided, in case you wish to contact them for additional details: you can often click on the highlighted name to email those who gave the recommendations. The date of the recommendation is also given, so that you can judge for yourself the timeliness of the recommendation; if someone repeats a recommendation, multiple dates are given. The webpage is also a site for local services to announce their availability (e.g., babysitters, house-cleaners, etc.): those names are listed for free, along with contact information, but might or might not be followed by community endorsements.
The recommendations have been adapted or paraphrased from posts to the eList. For more details on eList, the community's "electronic equivalent of talking with your neighbors over the back fence" service, please visit the Willow Glen Backfence website, www.WGBackfence.net.
If you wish to recommend your favorite plumber, florist, restaurant, or whatever, please indicate your approval to quote here by including the phrase "okay to quote" in your posted recommendation. We will only post recommendations from those who are willing to stand behind their recommendations: if we're not granted permission to include a "mailto:" link, we won't post the recommendation. Remember, this service is only useful if it has "content", so please send in your recommendations!
Small local Willow Glen businesses (5 equivalent employees or less) may send a notice off-list to recommend@WGBackfence.net. Our volunteers will feel free to edit the notices (as appropriate) into a standard format, and then the notices may be added to separate "Local Small Businesses" section towards the bottom of the Recommendations webpage. There is no charge for this service, and no guarantee that the notice will be posted in a timely manner or at all.

I second the recommendation. I go there for my 4-wheel alignment, and they have a policy where you can bring it in within a year to have it re-checked and adjusted for free if it comes out of alignment.

They're an honest shop that does excellent work on Swedish cars. The owner of the shop is a Swedish race car driver and all those guys there know everything like the backs of their hands. They also have a clean well kept waiting area with a bookshelf of books, magazines, free WiFi.

We've been using them [Swedish Auto Factory] to service our Saab 9-3 for years and have been very happy with them. They are extremely knowledgeable and honest. I think their prices are fair, too. Ask for Dan.

[Swedish Auto Factory does] Terrific Saab repair. Their prices aren’t cheap, but in my experience they never charged for what they didn’t need to do. The person who first recommended it to me was one of the most exacting and difficult-to-please people I ever met and he swore by them.

We have used Long Tran at Long's Auto Tech for several years to service both our older motor home (Chevy van chassis) and my husband's Toyota pickup truck. Long is honest, efficient, stands behind his work and is most pleasant to deal with. He has been in business for about 20 years. He is also a licensed Smog Check facility and ASE certified.

[at Motorspeed West (for BMWs)] … when I explained the problem to Ken, he knew exactly how to fix it. The cost - no charge. Over the years, they have proven themselves over and over again. They explain their repairs (so my non-mechanical brain can understand), and there have never been surprises.

I wanted to say "Thanks, eList, for the recommendations." oil change [on one car] transmission problem [other car] and knowing these local recommendations was key to deciding to try out the 76 station instead of worrying about where to go. They are always super friendly and have never suggested work that wasn't needed, have always been prompt with the work they've done and their price is totally fair. Emiliano Quevedo and his son operate the shop. Their work is very precise. I got a crunch on my then-new Highlander Hybrid and they fixed it seamlessly. I later took my older BMW to get some dings out. They do high-end work on Jaguars as well as quality work on all kinds of other cars. I think you'll be very pleased.

He lives in WG on Guadalupe off WG Way. He serves the entire Bay Area. He is very reasonable, very detail-oriented, honest and wanting work. He's married and has 2 kids. He fixed a side door latch on my van, power window motor, helped me get a good price on tire mounting and balancing and wheel alignment. I plan on using him again. Very dependable.

They did a great job. The young man was helpful and polite. Remember to go in with your car well warmed up, because a warm car gives better results. I went in on a rainy day and there was no wait. The cost was $70.

I thought I needed an alignment (recommended by a friend who drove my car) so I took it to Corky at Tire Outlet. He checked it out, had the guys reverse the two front tires, checked my tires for wear and then had me drive it again. The problem was corrected. He said my tires were wearing evenly and I didn't need to do anything. No charge! Tire Outlet was so happy he returned to them after being at Big O tires, they put a billboard about Corky above the tire outlet. "Corky's Back!"

Phil [at Pacific Tire Outlet] and his team were GREAT! [Other garages] told us we had shock problems and needed 4 new tires which would total over $1,000. Phil took a look at our car and said we only needed two tires and a rotation and that the shocks on our SUV were fine. We just left with a total bill of $345! ...bullying is an issue at every school. Project Cornerstone...has programs for students and training for teachers and school staff about bullying and the 41 developmental assets that all children and youth need to thrive. One of the programs is the ABC Program (Asset Builders Champion)... run by parent volunteers ... The goal is that the entire school climate changes. It really does work.

IMC is very affordable and the instructors are wonderful. The sensei is a very accomplish martial artist and runs a great studio. My children love it, and learn a lot of wonderful skills and values in the process…

She is a Cambridge advisor, which means she makes no commissions on your investments, you pay her a flat fee. She has helped me with all levels of financial planning from budgeting to setting up a trust. She is a lovely, friendly person who really cares about her clients. She also does your taxes if you wish!

I recently outfitted the kitchen in my cottage for less than $800…The quality really is incredible and the price puts them over the top. There are many stain and style options and they had my "custom" order ready in 2 business days. They do have some options (if I remember correctly) for spice racks, etc.

Definitely give Bill Rankin a call. He's the one who did the finishing work (door molding, baseboards, etc) on our remodel project just over a year ago. He's quite good at reducing waste, being on time with his estimate on completion, and his price if very competitive too.
...he did all of the finish work when we did our remodel a few years ago. This included baseboards, door and window molding. He's quality driven for sure and really fantastic to work with.
He's quite the craftsman and did a great job on all of our trim work inside our home after our remodel. He is efficient, friendly and works for a fair price.

I had helical piers added to my house. That process has a number of foundation aspects to it. I used Mike Koontz at Quilici Engineers in Campbell, and he did a great job. The contractors were pleased with the detail in the plans that he produced.

An experienced contractor who is also a designer, can often figure out remodeling problems that architects might not have had experience with. Allen does all the plans and just has an engineer verify and give a stamp for the county. He completely redid all the systems - electric, plumbing, heating, insulation, moving walls etc in my home with great success. He also specializes in “green” or high performance building practices. Hope it’s OK to recommend my brother the way I would any contractor I thought had done a fabulous job.

Larry Ruzzo is the owner and Willow Glen resident. They use a dry carpet cleaning method called the HOST Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaning System. It works very well and is much quicker than the wet shampoo methods used by other companies. I had them also clean drop rugs using this as well and was very happy. His prices are reasonable.

Greg put in and finished bamboo flooring in my remodel and it’s great. In another house he fixed oak flooring. He replaced boards and refinished the entire dining room when we had an undetected leak from the refrigerator which really warped and ruined part of the floor. You could not tell where he stopped with the refinish because it so matched the existing wood. Greg works alone, does the whole process himself. I have used Alfredo for two houses and also a water damage repair. I think his work is great and he is reasonably priced. He just finished our floors in a new to us but very old (1906) home in Naglee Park. The upstairs was covered with linoleum over the hardwood and carpet over that. We ripped out the carpet and Alfredo and his guys took care of the rest. The floors are fir and they are beautiful.

They have a service that will help you choose your colors. When we did it, it cost us $150 and we received a $50 credit towards paint at their store. They carry Benjamin Moore paint (as well as many other brands). We must have spent around $100 in tiny quarts finding just the right yellow for the living room, so it was a bargain to spend $100 to get the rest of the house done right the first time!

It's not local, but has a lot of stuff, including cabinet pulls and knobs for older homes. I replaced some of broken my glass knobs with theirs, and they also have better telescoping knob fasteners that eliminates the sharp cut threads and square nuts of the old knobs that can cut your hands on the inside of the drawers. Just be careful not to over-tighten glass the fasteners, or you will break the glass knobs.

I had a difficult painting job (remove old wallpaper, patch holes from a plumbing job in the shower wall and from a hole made by enlarging a vent) and the painter…and his crew did an excellent job for a reasonable price. He helped me to figure out a beautiful painting color scheme for the children's rooms, and was always friendly, hard-working and timely. Excellent prep, painting and clean up. I would use Phil's painting company again anytime.

To get rid of musty smell from drains, mix a cap full of these granules with warm water and then you pour it down *all* the drains in your house, right before you go to bed or if you are going to be out of the house for 6 hours or more. It may take several treatments, but these bacteria are better at cleaning old pipes and traps than any Drano-like product, and they also clean out your sewer line too. If you go easy on the chemical cleaners, the beneficial bacteria will last longer.

Xteria was Roofco of Silicon Valley before they added a window business, painting, siding, insulation, and exterior repairs. It is now almost three years after the job in November 2005, and I am still extremely pleased. They paid attention to more than just the shingles. The co-owner is a roofing inspector. He noticed … important items that none of the other roofers saw when they came out. Roofco is a general contractor as well as a roofing contractor -- so they can take responsibility for the entire project. The City inspector said: "You got a very good job." The owners live in Willow Glen.

I wanted to match the lines of the house with soffit and gutters and also wanted a skylight installed. You can pick up or load [bulk mulch] yourself... If you have a truck they'll dump your weight limit right into the truck. The minimum for delivery [extra charge] would probably be 1 yard, max per delivery is about 8-14 yards... pro-chip mulch... is made from recycled curbside trimmings. However, it can have little bits of plastic or garbage in it.

On the way back, check out the Pottery Outlet for a huge selection of various size and colored ceramic pots and fountains. They wholesale to Home Depot and Costco. Look closely or you will drive right by it. Get the list of plants you need and ask them for a bid. You will get the best price that way. The nursery is quite large, but they also have much larger growing fields in Hollister. Sometimes if you want a lot of one or two specific plants, you can get a really good price by calling growers directly in Watsonville/Hollister. I did a hedge of over 100 feet with two types of plants that way once. It helps if you speak some Spanish. The key is to buy in quantity and find the real grower, not the middleman.

Simon and his crew are extremely knowledgable about all facets of our urban forest and the City's permit process. He provided me with the required documents, recommendation on appropriate replacement, his price was no higher than anybody else and his crew was a joy to work with. We were dealing with a 60 year old Monterey Pine that straddled two yards (and roofs!) and impacted the two yards behind us. Oh, and there were PG&E lines and fences involved. They carefully managed this project with no damage to property and minimal impact on the landscaping directly below, which was amazing considering there are smaller trees, shrubs and plants directly under the drop line. They showed up on time, were respectful of everyone, cleaned up as they went and more careful than I expected during the multi-day process. Plus, I got some great mulch for my yard out of it!

I've been with Kaiser over 15 years (at Santa Clara & Santa Teresa) & have been very happy with it overall -- not always perfect but I haven't found them unresponsive, though I do agree that the patient must be an informed advocate (so far, I haven't had to threaten a lawsuit). Each year, I'm given the chance to choose a new insurance plan & I always stick with Kaiser because I've found it to be the best.

He gives a very careful, thorough eye exam and is connected with other specialists if you need them, including vision therapy-type doctors. He also fits the glasses himself, instead of delegating that to someone else, and is quite thorough and careful in that work. He is a good listener, and lays out alternatives and lets you decide for yourself. I like his office's selection of frames and also the fact that it is reasonably easy to get an appointment there.

...a great orthopedics department. I saw Dr. Ronald Hay a couple of months ago for a fractured/dislocated finger and was very pleased with him and his staff. And my husband had a total hip replacement a month ago with Dr. Bernardo Ferrari, who specializes in minimally invasive total joint replacement. ... was back at work after about a week and a half and walked without a cane after two weeks with barely a limp (he was on the young side for a hip replacement and in very good shape, but still I think that's pretty amazing!)

The best piece of advice I can give anyone, is to visit at least 2-3 facilities close by (with your loved one, if possible) and choose the best one you can afford for them. The main thing is to visit and have other family members and friends visit as often as often as possible. ... try and build a positive relationship with the staff (they aretaking careof your family member on a daily basis) and attend any family member meetings so as to have a say in their care ... check the "California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform" (CANHR) website if you need a higher level of care for your loved one since they keep a track record (any infractions) of each facility and rate them accordingly.

I "highly" recommend Brent Hatfield at Nuvoux the Salon. Brent is a master colorist and stylist. Nuvoux is a Bumble & Bumble concept salon. I have always walked out of his salon looking and feeling like a million dollars. Brent studied in Europe and is very active conducting hair seminars upon request. His shop is located in Los Gatos, and there is always plenty of parking.

...kudos for a great job... the attentive staff, relaxing background music...I was even offered a glass of ice water with a lemon slice upon sitting down! Tammy herself came over a couple times to check on me and make sure I was being well taken care of - and indeed I was! They offer a "speedy" manicure ($15) and "speedy" pedicure ($25), which is a shorter version of their spa editions, and I was ready to go in about 40 minutes. Perfect for the busy individual!

They're a four piece classic rock band. Although they wouldn't be appropriate for background music, they are great and a lot of fun! They've played at Monsieur Beans many times and some other local venues. In their website, there are two video clips of them performing so people can see that they aren't hideous and capable of scaring small children and the faint of heart...in addition they can play and sing well too. I purchased a Toshiba D-KVR20 Upconversion Progressive Scan DVD¬±RW/VHS Combo Recorder w/HDMI for $99... dubs VHS tapes onto DVD’s ... and it’s a pretty nice combo VCR/DVD player/recorder. I’ve been moving stuff off my DVR onto DVD’s and that works well too. Plus the upconversion makes watching normal DVD’s on my HDTV really sharp. Another machine that is worthy of consideration is the Sony RDR-VX555 - DVDr/ VCR combo

[Downtown Dogs] runs a weekly small dog social on Saturdays from 11:45-12:45. The fee is $10. I love Downtown Dogs for daycare and boarding. And the small dog social was fun, although I only went the one time since we do daycare three days a week. Another option is to go try Butcher Dog Park in Cambrian on the corner of Camden/Lancaster. They have a small dog enclosure (under 40 lbs.) and a large dog enclosure. We played in the small dog enclosure a couple of Saturdays ago, and it was good free fun!

He is just amazing and great to work with and he got Ginger trained off leash within a half hour! I couldn't believe my eyes! Now, it's up to us to keep working with her to remember her paces. All this was done with a pinch collar, long leash and patience. No food was offered (to my relief as I have never felt that was necessary) nor rebukes or negativity. I can't wait to get started tomorrow on practice. He is pricey but well worth it.

I second Shampoo Chez, we take our dogs there for grooming but have used the self service wash too. If your dog can walk up a ramp to a bathtub it should work for you, and the staff is always willing to help if you need a hand.

Vikki’s teaching is based on Ian Dunbar’s philosophy of positive reward (food, praise, play) and she was so patient with us and our dogs. It is a National Register Historic Landmark...a craftsman bungalow built in 1910 for the local women's club. It seats up to about 80, has a stage, stone fireplace, hardwood floors and trim...no outdoor space, beautiful places for photos near the fireplace, windows and outside the front entrance. They have completed some restoration and are raising funds to finish the work. They have very reasonable rates. The women's club supports local public education and local history, so the rental fees go back into serving the public.

No whole cooked turkeys; complete dinners only. Poor customer service: impossible to get questions answered or phone calls returned. Included in this only because of popular demand.
Forms to order turkeys ... or order by phone. Price per pound ... about $4.99, and birds can be picked up already heated on Thanksgiving Day itself from 10-3. They can also debone and slice for no extra charge. Side dishes will also be available for purchase.
Cooked turkeys must be picked up the day before Thanksgiving. [High priced]
Pick-up on Thanksgiving Day is fine...$7.99/lb. for a whole uncarved bird.
Whole, cooked birds (not sliced) available for pick-up on Thanksgiving Day. Pre-order turkeys that run about 11 lbs. each @ $3.99/lb. Birds will need to be reheated. Turkey may be available that day for pick-up if they don’t run out.
Prefer you pick up a day before. A whole cooked turkey will run about $49 and serve 6-8.
Thanksgiving pick-up of cooked turkeys will be 10 am to noon. Price is $5.25/lb. for cooked or $9.00/lb. for cooked and sliced.

we love it. (Really- it's changed my life.) Awesome recipe database here too, even if you don't join up. (I've become a much better cook since starting down this path.)One cool thing about Live Earth is that they have periodic community farms days and seasonal celebrations; you can visit the farm, do some u-pick of whatever is in season, and pet the goats! Anyone I've talked to about Two Small Farms has been very happy with them as well.

[Live Earth Farm]...network with other local suppliers so that in addition to the normal fruits and veggies you can order eggs, artisan whole grain bread, and/or preserves... They stay in good contact with their customers and are very responsive. I had to go onto their waiting list to get a spot, but it wasn't long before they got an opening that I could take.

We were there Sat morning.... I had poached eggs that were done just right.... they have the thick bacon (yummy) and you have a choice of either the regular shredded potatoes or home fries which I tried and were wonderful.... they cubed and left the peels on the potatoes and were cooked with bell pepper and onions.... The lunch was delicious, and only $6.45 for each of us. The soup and Chinese Chicken Salad that came with the meal were great, as was the lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork that my husband and I ordered! We felt a little guilty as we are fans of the Taiwan Restaurant; nevertheless, Edna Ray is a worthy competitor. They also weren't very busy.

It's a very small place, but pleasantly furnished and quiet. The food was quite good and the owner, who served us, is very nice and helpful. I just felt that GRB could use more patrons and they are really quite good. My husband had the sweet/sour chicken which I enjoyed quite a bit as it didn't have the overly strong flavor of the red sauce seen in most places and I had the shrimp with snow peas of which the peas were plentiful. I have noticed that many Chinese restaurants don't put many veggies on the plate with the meats anymore. So the snow peas were a welcome sight.

...was a fantastic surprise!... The Sweet Potato Chat was seasoned with tamarind, mint chutney, and other spices that made it unique, and the sweet potatoes were sauteed, and then briefly crisped ... The Tandoori Ghobi ... was crisp and soft and flavorful. The Amchuri Aloo Bhindi...wow! You enter and you are truly transported by this place.

This is home cooked Satvik-style vegetarian Indian food. Really, really good. Don't order off the menu. Just let them feed you the nightly Thali dinner. They won't stop feeding you until you say you are full, which is the true Indian style. A small place with little ambiance, but run by a very nice family, who really knows how to cook. Go for the food, you will not be disappointed...easy on the budget.

My son’s 1st/2nd grade class had a field trip today to Pizza My Heart ...100% FREE! ...let them go in the freezer, refrigerator, etc...gave a Pizza My Heart Willow Glen tshirt and then let all of the kids make their own pizza with unlimited toppings ... dough-throwing lesson and show by one of the cooks...I know they are a chain, but the local Willow Glen spot is definitely dedicated to our community.

As I waited for my [carryout] the two nice ladies enjoying their dinner turned to me to tell me how this is a very authentic Persian restaurant and all the dishes are wonderful. What used to be 7 on The Alameda and Bush is now a Japanese restaurant called Bluefin. Decor has been lightened up a bit, and a Sushi bar installed between the open kitchen and dining room. Owner / Chef Jun has created wonderful signature dishes, the chef's choice sushi plate was wonderful, and they have delicious sukiyaki, tempura, and Korean specialties. Good drinks and wine, including (of course) several choices of saki. Parking available behind the restaurant.

We agree with the previous posters: it was very, very good. The owner could not have been nicer. The place is very comfortable and pleasant (a surprise considering it's previous incarnations!) And the prices seemed extremely reasonable to us and the food was delicious. There were only a few diners but saw several people picking up take out orders. If you call ahead you can arrange a tour. They provide a room with a locking door (which is huge if you're homeless), job and budget coaching, onsite daycare and school bus service. After 3-6 months, about 2/3 of them are able to move into permanent housing. They are always glad to get gently used clothes, sheets, towels, blankets, disposable diapers, and gently used toys.

This women has runs a fabulous on-line business out of Oregon...She has done 4 signs for me personally and many more for my family and friends. I love her work. She’s timely and the shipping is affordable.

Sells SJ Honey. Her prices are wonderful and she makes great beeswax candles for the holidays. She and her husband are involved in the Santa Clara Valley bee guild I believe and do a lot of education about bees and bee keeping.

Sold at Three Sisters Store, 1393 Lincoln Ave. The honey is raw, unfiltered and most important of all has been made by Willow Glen Bees. .. We use essential oils in the hives in the winter to fight of mites and diseases then stop by March. The money goes to 4-H kids, History Park and Happy Hollow Zoo setting up bee habitats and bee apiaries. Never give honey or food with honey in it to a child under one year old. [Steve is also 'on call' to help if you have bees swarming in your yard – ed.]
